This nearly 8000 sq ft home has been awarded National and Evanston Landmark Status. Ernest Mayo, a former member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, migrated to America and opened an office in Chicago. Mayo was the visionary behind the Mansion which was built in the early 1900's. The home at 1046 N Sheridan was one of the last homes Mayo built. To create this unique style home, Mayo included Prairie style roof lines, Craftsman wood eaves, as well as including some traditional and elegant features such as the colonial pillars and French foors. The combining architectural styles of Prairie, Colonial, and the Revival bring a vitality to the corner of Greenleaf and Sheridan. This home was originally built for Albert Williams and his wife Carrie. In the 1940's the house was purchased by A.D. Bodfors who was a well known musician and opened several music schools bearing his name. His only son, Franz, was also a highly respected piano player, performing at several concerts in Chicago and also taught at DePaul University School of Music. After a strategic restoration of this home in recent years, the current owner, Janet Kohl, and her family have enjoyed living in the home. The Restoration was thorough and a time consuming process that truly brought the home back to its authentic condition. The Story of Restoring Home: The restoration occurred when Janet Kohl purchased the property. As we've heard, the G-d is in the details, Kohl realized the importance of bring the home back to its authentic self, which included all the way down to hand polishing door handles. Janet Kohl subscribes to the principle "Do what you love and the money will follow," Kohl didn't plan her path. A Glenview, IL native, she was always very visual and interested in creative pursuits and design. Her first "old house epiphany" came in high school, at a friend's grandmother's Victorian home slated for demolition. She fell in love with the period's detail and fine craftsmanship. As a developer, Kohl had several projects; some gut rehabs, some renovations, some restorations. When her "dream" appeared, it looked more like a nightmare to everyone else. The house was uninhabitable, with antiquated plumbing and wiring, gaping holes through all three floors to the basement from years of unchecked water damage, and the decay for decades of neglect throughout the property. The Story of Restoring Spirit: Janet Kohl, with the help of local interior designers, has created a serene space that is good for mind, body, and soul. This is a home where through the use of art, decor and inspiration, the soul can find peace. It's an event that encourages community engagement through our interactive workshops and tours. In evaluating the depth of the inner journey Kohl realized that this work proves perhaps more challenging than the gut-rehab of a building, but the same principles apply. These principles have become Restoration of Spirit, in the form of a book and other projects. Along her journey, Kohl found many metaphors between restoring a home to its authentic condition and how our spirits can be restored through a similar process. Janet is in the process of completing a blog & a book about her experience called Restoration of Spirit in the near future.
